GEAR UP Mississippi sponsored a wide variety of exciting educational opportunities all across Mississippi for our students. These summer programs were free and open only to GEAR UP Mississippi students.

"The Amazing Race: Three Paths Up The Mississippi" - Alcorn University - Lorman, MS - June 24-29, 2007.

"College Discovery: 7 Days @ Ole Miss" - University of Mississippi- Oxford, MS - June 9-16, 2007. Click here to visit the Univeristy of Mississippi GEAR UP Summer Program website.

"CSI: Agriculture" - Mississippi State University - Starkville, MS - June 10-15, 2007.  Students learned how to use the tools and procedures used by  forensic scientists to analyze evidence to solve problems in agriculture. They learned about exciting topics including DNA analysis, MRI imaging, basic toxicology, and the basics of tissue identification.  At the end of the week, they solved a crime, putting into practice the skills they have learned.

"Extreme Design: College Edition" - Mississippi State University - Starkville, MS - June 10-15, 2007. The program included a week long immersion in University culture with an emphasis on the principles of Architecture, Art and Interior Design.  Click here to visit the MSU Extreme Design website.

"Young Nurses Summer Workshop" - Meridian Community College  - Meridian, MS - June 3-8, 2007.   Students developed study and test-taking skills; life-management abilities such as goal setting, self-confidence and persistence. Students were exposed to the clinical nursing practice and college life experiences.  Students networked with current nursing students and recent graduates of nursing programs.   Click here to visit the Meridian Summer Program website.

"Health Careers Exploration: 7 Days @ Ole Miss" - University of Mississippi- Oxford, MS - June 23-30, 2007.  Click here to visit the Univeristy of Mississippi GEAR UP Summer Program website.

"Mississippi Delta Art & Heritage Summer Experience"  - Delta State University  - Cleveland, MS.  Students explored the heritage and culture of the Mississippi Delta within a framework of art, history and geography. including field trips, delta foods, live music, murals, and sculpture.

Session 3: "The Civil Rights Movement" July 8-13, 2007

"Survivor: College 101" - University of Southern Mississippi - Hattiesburg, MS - June 17-22, 2007.  Students gained leadership skills, took part in friendly competition and got a head start on preparing for college.    Click here to visit the USM Survivor: College 101 website.
