GEAR UP Mississippi Summer Academies 2011

GEAR UP Mississippi will sponsor eight academic enrichment academies during the summer of 2011! The academies will promote early awareness about the need to plan for college both academically and financially, as well as explore career-focused activities for participants. The summer academies include a minimum of 8 days and 7 nights of instructional, enrichment, and recreational activities between May 28, 2011 and June 26, 2011.   Participants will be exposed to day-long activities as well as supervised nightly social activities. All academies are residential and free for selected rising 10th grade GEAR UP Mississippi students. (The 2011 participants have been selected).

The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the University of Southern Mississippi will host the Discover Mississippi Summer Academy.     The academy will encourage students to enjoy science and inspire them to attend college while increasing students’ understanding of realistic expectations for being successful in college. Participants will engage in hands-on activities and leave the academy with an appreciation for Mississippi’s wildlife and career opportunities in the sciences.

The Office of Sponsored Programs at Mississippi Valley State University will host the BIO to CHEM Experiences Summer Academy.    The academy will promote environmental friendly habits and enhance participants’ academic performance in the sciences. The academy will stimulate students to consider careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields and arouse students’ interests in pursuing higher education and setting career goals.

The Division of Outreach and Continuing Education a the University of Mississippi will host the GEAR UP Mississippi Summer College Exploration and Math Academy I.    The academy will provide supplemental instruction in mathematics with an effort to improve basic math skills. The academy will promote an opportunity for students to prepare for post secondary education. Participants will attend on-campus events as well as utilize campus recreational facilities.

The College of Excellence at Alcorn State University will host the New Millennium Social Studies Academy.      The academy will address the Civil Rights/Human Rights component of the Mississippi Social Studies Framework. The academy will focus on social and political change in the United States and the impact  that the Civil Rights struggle had on African Americans and other ethnic groups such as Native Americans, Hispanics, immigrant groups and individuals with disabilities.

The University of Southern Mississippi will host the Survivor: Forensic Files Academy.     The academy will focus on integrating science disciplines into forensic science, encourage participants to apply inquiry-based processes and problem solving skills to scientific investigations. Participants will engage in surface and burial recovery, crime scene investigations, DNA analysis, and other forensic science techniques.

East Central Community College will host a Social Studies Academy.     The academy will incorporate history instruction from the traditional classroom to the hands on approach to learning Social Studies content. Students will engage in learning through daily activities, field trips, and group activities. Participants will be exposed to various educational offerings to increase their awareness of the need to graduate from high school and successfully complete college.
