GEAR UP Mississippi Summer Academies 2013

GEAR UP Mississippi will sponsor five academies during the summer of 2013! The academies will focus on creating an awareness of pre-orientation experiences which address institutions’ academics and support systems, campus logistics, career awareness, and enrichment/recreational activities for participants.  Participants will be exposed to day-long activities as well as supervised nightly social activities. All academies are residential and free for selected rising 12th grade GEAR UP Mississippi students.

The GEAR UP MS Skills for Success Academy: Will promote early awareness of students’ need to plan academically and financially for college by using the ten training modules provided by GEAR UP. These modules focus on the following topics: values, career success, time management, effective listening, effective note taking, study skills and test taking, leadership skills, critical thinking skills, reading strategies, college and job application completion and resume writing. The program will also provide students an opportunity to prepare for post-secondary education by living on a college campus for fifteen days and fourteen nights, participating in college exploring sessions with University of Mississippi faculty, administrators, and staff, being mentored by successful college students, as well as afford them the opportunity to explore the culture offered on the campus by visiting museums, attending a theater production, etc.

Students will spend seven hours a day, five days a week, for two weeks in class learning about the aforementioned topics. They will meet and dialogue with university faculty, administrators, and staff during college exploring sessions. Students will also participate in recreation designed specifically for them.

The MVSU GEAR UP MS 2013 Summer Academy: Seeks to implement a college preparedness program for 75 rising high school seniors from schools throughout Mississippi. This program – which will expose students to Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) and Electronic Technology as career options – will focus on successful completion of high school with emphasis on assessing each participant’s academic needs. MVSU’s goals for its GEAR UP program cover providing students with necessary information on college entrance requirements, high school graduation requirements, and career/interpersonal skills, all interlaced with approved modules. The Academy will align with MVSU staff in Admissions, Financial Aid, Counseling/Testing/Career Services, Community Service Learning, Residential Life, and Academic Affairs. As part of key enrichment activities, students will engage in different educational and cultural field trips along with a unique computer class.

The Learning Strategies Academy: This Academy will provide seventy-five (75) students with a thorough knowledge of what is required to gain admission to college, financial resources that are available to pay for college, when and how to complete the applications and what services are available on the college campus to facilitate student are success. Key Awareness Activities will focus on the Matriculation Process, Pre-Orientation Experiences, Academic and Support Systems, Campus Logistics and career Awareness. They Key Enrichment Activities will focus on the ten (10) GEAR UP Mississippi Instructional Strategies, Financial Literacy and Online Learning. Field trips and recreational activities will supplement the classroom activities. The expected outcome of the Academy is that all participants will understand how colleges operate, be able to negotiate the college environment and complete admissions and financial aid applications.

The JSU College Boot Camp Experience: Will encourage rising seniors to take advantage of enrollment opportunities and financial resources in preparation for higher education. Students will participate in hands on modules that promote academic success and uncomplicated transitioning into higher education. Students will learn to identify and articulate their values, gain knowledge of learning styles, to use time and stress management techniques and how to listen effectively and take efficient notes. Study skills and test taking modules will teach students new approaches to mastering subject matter. Supplemental activities will stimulate student’s interest in higher education; they will gain an understanding of the university’s entrance application and academic advising processes. Students will be coached in career oriented goal setting after assessing their strengths and capabilities. Information regarding campus support systems will increase student’s familiarity with the university environment.

Survivor Academy: The Department of Biological Sciences at USM will host a summer academy, entitled “Survivor”, in an effort to prepare upcoming high school seniors for entry into one of Mississippi’s four-year higher education institutions. Survivor Academy will host 75 students for seven days and six nights. During that time, students will be immersed in the college experience. Students will live on campus in a dormitory and receive extensive first-hand knowledge from a licensed high school teacher through a series of college preparatory modules and will interact with university faculty and staff. They will work to complete a college entrance application, practice interviews for potential scholarship and career opportunities, create a resume, learn how to find and apply for financial aid, discover tools for academic and personal success, choose a major, and how to prepare for a career after graduation. Students will work in teams to be the “best applicants” in a friendly competition similar to the hit reality TV show “Survivor”.
