College Tours

Each year all GEAR UP Mississippi students are taken on tours of Mississippi colleges and universities. Research shows that one of the most effective ways to motivate students about college opportunities is to take them on a college tour.  As the old saying goes "seeing is believing."

The tours are designed to familiarize students with a variety of colleges and illustrate the various types of academic majors and campus environments offered by our institutions of higher learning.

Information for GEAR UP Site Coordinators:
The Campus Tour Reservation Form must be completed and faxed to the GEAR UP office and also to the university or college you plan to visit at least two weeks before your visit.

After the tour is completed the Campus Tour Student Survey Form must be completed by each student who goes on the trip.   The completed surveys should then be sent to the GEAR UP office.

Premier Agendas

GEAR UP Mississippi is pleased to offer our students Premier Agendas (planning calendars) . We have provided these planning calendars for each student in our GEAR UP cohort and their subject area teachers. We believe they serve as great tools for teaching students to manage their time well – a skill we know they will need in high school, college, and beyond.

Along with the planning calendars is a facilitator kit. Inside that kit you will find powerful tools to help implement usage of the agendas at your school.

Independent studies, including one by Dr. Stephen Cramer (2004), reported consistent improvement by students using Premier Agenda over students who didn't use a planning calendar in the following areas:
• homework completion
• academic performance
• goal-setting and time management
• organizational skills
• home-school communication

GEAR UP teachers should give students extra class credit for using their Premier Agendas in school. If you require additional planning calendars, please contact Lashanda Colbert at lcolbert@ihl.state.ms.us or at 601-432-7804.

Scholars Clubbar

The Scholars Club program focuses on a small group of GEAR UP students, emphasizing college preparation through regular meetings, college campus visits and service learning projects that are grade and age specific. The clubs bring students and their parents into the college information loop and create a model for other students to follow.

To start a new Scholars Club at your school please submit an application to the GEAR UP office. Each participating student should have a ACT PLAN score of 18 or above. Each club will be provided additional funds to support approved activities. The teacher who serves as the club sponsor will receive a stipend.

 Suggested Scholar Club Student Activities:
1. Compose a Mission or Goal Statement – an exercise from 7 Habits of Highly Effective Students

2.  Learn the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Students then teach other students who aren't members of the Scholars Clubs.  Set up regular small group mentoring meetings with the Scholars Club students mentoring other students.

3. Invite college recruiters to conduct a special presentation for your scholars    club

4. Research and identify five to ten sources of scholarship aid
