GEAR UP Mississippi actively encourages students to set high academic expectations, stay in school, study hard, and take courses that will prepare them to enter and succeed in college. GEAR UP Mississippi provides educational support services to our partner schools throughout Mississippi.

GEAR UP Mississippi operates as part of the Institutions of Higher Learning, Office of Academic and Student Affairs in collaboration with the Mississippi Department of Education, State Board for Community and Junior Colleges and community and national partners. Funding is provided by the United States Department of Education.

GEAR UP Mississippi Summer Academies 2012

GEAR UP Mississippi will sponsor six academies during the summer of 2012! The academies will focus on creating an awareness of pre-orientation experiences which address institutions’ academics and support systems, campus logistics, career awareness, and enrichment/recreational activities for participants. The summer academies include a minimum of 5 days and 4 nights between May 28, 2012 and June 15, 2012. Participants will be exposed to day-long activities as well as supervised nightly social activities. All academies are residential and free for selected rising 11th grade GEAR UP Mississippi students.

2011-2012 GEAR UP MS MILESTONE CONTEST

GEAR UP Mississippi will offer the ACT PLAN test at participating GEAR UP schools between February 27 - March 9, 2012. The PLAN program help 10th graders build a solid foundation for future academic and career success. It is a comprehensive guidance resurce that helps students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post graduation years.

Director's Message

GEAR UP Mississippi has concluded our first semester of the 10th grade year. Last August, the focus of GEAR UP Mississippi was on the transition of our students to high school and ensuring that students adjusted to their new surroundings with our support. This year, we face a different challenge as we continue towards graduation.

GEAR UP Mississippi’s primary goal is to assist every GEAR UP student in preparing for college with an emphasis on assuring academic success in their college preparatory courses. Tenth grade is an important year in this journey. Students need to understand that everything they achieve academically is a building block to their future. This includes many things from the classes they take to the tests they must pass in order to graduate.

Last year many students began the first phase of the Subject Area Testing Program (SATP). Four tests will be administered to students before graduating: Algebra I, Biology I, English II and U.S. History from 1877. These tests are extremely important because students must pass them in order to graduate. Most GEAR UP Mississippi students took the Algebra I and Biology I assessments last year. Those results should be available to parents and students this academic year.

GEAR UP Mississippi strongly encourages parents to pay special attention to these scores. If you find your child did not pass or even missed the tests, there is still time for students to take them. Districts offer opportunities for students to take the test again each year. During this tenth grade year of implementation, GEAR UP Mississippi will focuses on providing tutoring, remediation and enrichment interventions for students.

This means there are services offered at each GEAR UP Mississippi high school to enhance student achievement for the state mandated tests. This includes the tests from last year as well as the English I test that most students will take this year. GEAR UP Mississippi is dedicated to helping students excel on their path to college.

GEAR UP Mississippi also aims to arm students and parents with the necessary information to make college a reality. This includes making you aware of the courses needed to succeed in postsecondary education. Students and parents should visit the college preparation link located under the “For Parents” tab on this website for a clear outline of the courses students must take to gain admission into a Mississippi institution of higher learning. Please continue to visit this site in the future to find more information about the various pathways you can take to get to college.

In addition to the information we make available, GEAR UP Mississippi offers another invaluable source of support through the highly qualified staff provided to the districts. Each school has a College Coach assigned to assist parents, students, and school staff with the implementation of the GEAR UP Mississippi project. These experienced educators are present in your school and the community to assist you with each step on the way to college. Seek them out with your questions and concerns.
